TITLE : REBREATHING, CONTRIBUTING FACTOR IN SUDDEN INFANT DEATH SYNDROME (SIDS)
BY : Ulleval Sykehus - Sweden Techno Consult DATE: 1995
NOTES: - Rebreathing of expired gases with accumulation of CO2 has been suggested as one possible explanation of the association of SIDS and prone sleeping. - PHOENICS is used to simulate the distribution and dynamics of expired air in the vicinity of an infant in a cot in different sleeping positions. - The preliminary results shown here suggest that prone sleeping gives a strong accumulation of expired air in front of the infant's face, with risk of rebreathing.
