Rising population levels cause ever greater strain on the environment around us. As supplies of natural resources dwindle, and the impact of fossil fuels becomes more evident, there is increasing focus on use of renewable energy sources such as wind farms. CFD software, such as PHOENICS, is an invaluable tool which energy companies can use to optimise design and placement of individual wind turbines or entire wind farms, taking into account local conditions including predominant wind direction and local geography.

PHOENICS and CFD can be employed across many other environmental applications. Pollutant dispersion in urban environments, the heat island effect, solar farms, and solar updraft towers are a few of the applications PHOENICS has modelled successfully.
