May 2008

The International Centre for Heat and Mass Transfer, the CFD Research Laboratory of the University of New South Wales Australia, and the LEEVAM Research Laboratory of the University of Cergy-Pontoise, France, are co-sponsoring CHT-08, the fourth International Symposium on Advances in Computational Heat Transfer which will be held in Marrakech, Morocco between 11-16 May 2008.

The Conference is planned as a tribute to Professor Brian Spalding in honour of his 85th birthday. Some 200 abstracts have been received by the organizers to date. Anyone interested in contributing, or attending, can obtain further information via http://cht08.mech.unsw.edu.au

February 2008

PHOENICS/FLAIR Workshop
ACADS are hosting a Workshop, conducted by Dr John Ludwig, in Sydney from February 19-22. This is an opportunity to learn about the use and applications of CFD modelling. Anyone interested in obtaining further information, or in attending, should contact ACADS on acadsbsg@ozemail.com.au or telephone 61 3 9886 6596.

  1. Sources and Boundary Conditions
  2. Turbulence Modelling
  3. Convergence Control
  4. Transient Models
  5. Body Fitted Coordinates
  6. Relaxation Settings
  7. Grid Meshing

It will also cover a range of fluid flow problems including:

  1. Fire and Smoke in Buildings
  2. Fires in Tunnels
  3. Air Flow In and Around Buildings
  4. Car Park Ventilation
  5. Visibility
  6. Natural Ventilation
  7. Conjugate and Radiant Heat Transfer
  8. Thermal Comfort
  9. Sprinklers
  10. Jet Fans
October 2007

A User Meeting for PHOENICS Users in the Far East is being held at Tsinghua University in Beijing on Tuesday October 23, 0900 - 1700. Professor Spalding will deliver a lecture Heating, Ventilating and Air Conditioning. Anyone interested in attending, or in obtaining further information, should contact Mr Fan JL: email fanjl@phoenics.cn.

Professor Spalding is delivering a Keynote Lecture at the First Asian Symposium on Computational Heat Transfer and Fluid Flow being held in Xi'an, PR China, from October 17-21. His lecture is entitled "CFD: Progress and Prospects". Further information on the Conference can be obtained by contacting ascht07@mail.xju.edu.cn

September 2007

CHAM is pleased to announce that a Benelux PHOENICS User Meeting was held on 5th September 2007 featuring technical contributions by PHOENICS Users throughout the region and an overview of PHOENICS (2007).

Proceedings will be posted here shortly.

CHAM models BTB Exhausts

As part of a recent development project by BTB to design a new exhaust manifold for a BMW M20 engine CHAM were asked to carry out both steady state and transient flow simulations. The image shows the results of the transient analysis and highlights the pulsing through the equal length primaries of the manifold. The manifold, together with a GroupN system has been fitted to a customer's track-day car and ensures that noise levels will be met without compromising on engine performance.

July 2005

Professor Brian Spalding delivered a keynote address entitled ‘A Simplified CFD Method for the Design of Heat Exchangers’ at the ASME 2005 Summer Conference on Advanced Computational Methods and Applications for Heat Exchanger Design.
